And what the heck is Mabon?

Mabon is an ancient Welsh god, whose mother was Modron, the great healer. He was taken from his mother when he was only three years old and left in the wilderness to die. He survived by learning from the stag, the blackbird, the owl, the eagle, and the salmon. His birthday is celebrated on the autumnal equinox.
